Wind Power

Wind Energy Assessment in Africa by Demetrios Mentis, The map shows most of the continent has very poor to marginal wind potential. This confirms my personal experience working in Africa. Most of the time we had a weak wind, even near the coast.

Offshore the wind was always soft, even in rainstorms. When we flared exploration wells the cloud from the burners would usually head straight up, then bend over very high, at around 3000 feet. This tells me  there´s wind high up, but near the surface there´s nothing.

In the interior, in the Sahel, we would get little tornado like dust devils, and very little breeze.



And here's the solar power insolation average for the year. Notice that Congo and other areas with little wind also has very poor solar potential:
